thoughts: the thin red line (or any other colour for that matter)... and crossing borders...

well. can't remember if i've posted it before, but here goes anyway. been thinking (as always) about boundaries, borders and that kind of things. and have come to realise that there is a fine line. a VERY fine line. because despite the fact that everyone claims certain things have 'shades of grey', the main point is that within those shades of grey, a line IS there (otherwise how is it possible that the shades of grey exist?). in everything there is demarcation - black and white, good and bad, right and wrong, light and dark....

there are other lines, definitely not as clear cut, and VERY easy to cross... genius and insanity, punishment and brutality (when does punishment become abuse?), being 'just good friends' and 'something more' (this one's for you vince... i feel your pain bro)... it's a little like crossing the border between countries... if they're adjacent, how do you know where one ends and the other begins (assuming you aren't near immigration - somewhere in the mountains, for instance)...

sometimes we cross the boundaries without knowing it, and sometimes we have to make a very concious effort to make sure we don't, depending on what kind they are. because when circumstances change, the boundaries sometimes move in ways we don't expect. they either become more clearly defined, or they get even more blurred. and suddenly you can find yourself on the wrong side of the boundary, particularly when it comes to relationships, because when things happen (like a change in status), the way you do things sometimes has to change...

that's what makes relationships such a tricky issue i guess... always having to be aware which side of the border you're on, because if you're on the wrong side then....this applies particularly in BGR (no, definitely)...

in relationships (especially for THAT kind), there are always what everyone calls 'signs'. signs to see which way 'things are heading'. but like all signs, they can be misread. and that's where problems begin. when we start making assumptions, second-guessing what's going on... trying to read the signs, without actually clarifying. ok, i take it that sometimes it's difficult (no, make that VERY DIFFICULT) to ask for answers to confirm suspicions. but it's all part of the game we play isn't it? that's what makes relationships so interesting... but it hurts, it REALLY hurts when we guess wrong... then the whole thing blows up in our faces in a way... then perhaps in those relationships, the boundaries change (perhaps status wise)...

so this post is for everyone out there who's ever been in this situation, or who will be in this kind of situation *eventually*. some of us'll go through it once, maybe even more than once... but all i can say is 'good luck'... and hope things work out... take your risks if you feel you have to, because sometimes, opportunities come round only once in a lifetime... will you give it all you got, or let it slip by?

till next time...
