thoughts: alternate reality...

"not too long ago, in a JC in singapore not too far away... there was a boy. his name was chris...."

ok ok. so it's a lame opening. but it IS true. back then about... *counts on fingers* 5 years ago, chris was a different (and i mean different) person from he was now. maybe it was because chris grew up. maybe it was because things changed. but somewhere deep inside, that part of chris remains...

before i became the "nice guy" that most people knew, i was into afro-american stuff. VERY much into afro-american stuff... here's an excerpt from my profile on the now defunct class webpage:

"...He also has a interest in blacks, and is well informed in both their culture, their slang etc..."

now don't get me wrong. i wasn't racist (in a negative sense anyway). i just had this thing for rap, R & B and afro slang (just once, i would like to go up to some afro guys and say "wassup my niggas?" without being scared i'd get the shit beaten out of me). i'm not embarrassed that i had this "phase" in my life (as some would like to think). because it's a part of me that makes me who i am. and it explains why i do certain things.

till today chris still is very much into it, though on a lower scale (as some friends can atest to). just that in JC that was at it's height (as evidenced by my reading materials - SLAM magazine, which in my opinion was a "magazine written by afro guys for basketball fans"; swearing - which is now greatly reduced). i listened a lot to "music" (which some people claim it isn't) by emeniem (as evidenced by my nickname), coolio, tupac, 50 cent (always dreamt of pulling up in a car with the stereos blasting "in the club") among others.

but that was 5 years ago. now chris has toned down considerably (though the dress sense for loose clothing still stands). but somewhere deep inside (in his own alternate reality), chris does wish that he was an afro. some things never really change (reminds me of N.E.R.D. - No one Ever Really Dies).

till next time... peace out...
